The WKU Student Government Association held “Hill-O-Ween” Tuesday in Centennial Mall to give out candy and host activities for students on campus.
The Hilltopper Organization of Latin American Students (HOLAS) and the Accessibility Ambassadors were also present at the event.. There, students could paint succulent pots, make candy apples or just go around and talk with the various organizations while collecting candy.
“A couple of the committees [within SGA] got together and were like ‘we should do an event for Halloween’,” Rush Robinson, junior senator, campus improvement and sustainability committee chair and organizer of the event, said. “It was a cool turnout and we’ve had just over 100 people.”
SGA also held its weekly meeting Tuesday night, where it passed four new bills to help fund future events.
Bill 11-24-F allocated $325 for the “Pack the Pantry” food drive that will be held throughout November.
SGA will work in tandem with the WKU ROTC to help deliver all of the food to the WKU Food Pantry to “help fight back against student hunger.”
“We have to support the community. It makes families at home feel like you’re taken care of,” said Tiffany Jessup, WKU graduate student and active duty service member. “So we’re trying to start an initiative within the ROTC program to rally for food, pet supplies, coats, jackets and everything during the month of November.”
Donations will be collected at various events and donation boxes across campus, as well as at the SGA Office in Downing Student Union 2045 starting in November.
Bill 12-24-F allocated $200 to help pay for decorations for a Day of the Dead celebration hosted by the Modern Languages department.
The event will be held on Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. in the Mahurin Honors College Multipurpose Room and seeks to push students to explore different cultures and what the Day of the Dead means according to Mahurin Honors College Senator Caden Lucas, author of the bill.
Bill 13-24-F allocates $600 to help fund the Veterans Day 5k Race organized by SGA. The race will be held on November 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kereiakes Park.
Attendees will pay a $15 entry fee. There will also be a raffle for $5 with a chance to win a 9th Generation iPad. All money raised will go towards veterans and the WKU ROTC program.
Bill 14-24-F allocates $80 to help fund an SGA table outside of DSU for World Kindness Day.
There will be a take a note, leave a note table to help spread kindness on campus along with donuts according to Eli Carter, senator and author of the bill.
