The aroma of pancake batter and the sounds of laughter filled the lobby of the Honors College and International Center while students, faculty and staff gathered for free food and drinks at the annual end-of-semester pancake breakfast.
Hosted in the Mahurin Honors College from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the pancake breakfast is an annual event to celebrate and relax before finals week and winter break, MHC Interim Associate Director Rodney King said.
“[The Pancake Breakfast] is just for people to come out and have a good time,” King said.
The pancake assembly line offered the additions of chocolate chips or sprinkles as well as pancake designs. One student got a Big Red shaped pancake, another a pancake that spelled “MHC.” The pancake batter was also a variety of colors throughout the evening.
“[The color of the batter] is a creative decision by the chefs in the back,” King said.
At a table adjacent to the line, students could add butter to their pancakes along with maple syrup and chocolate and caramel drizzles. Additionally there were drinks like lemonade and soda available.
During the back half of the event, hot chocolate and marshmallows were brought out. The marshmallows were used in both the hot chocolate and on the pancakes. Crushed peppermints were also brought out for the hot chocolate.
“The peppermint is really good,” Suri Ardon Garcia, a freshman dental hygiene major, said.
While the night ended with the lobby sparsely populated, echoes of the event hung in the atmosphere of HCIC.
