Two students – Maggie Yelton, junior health sciences major, and Molly Ricke, freshman dental hygiene major, decided this winter was time to establish a club to bring together those who love snowboarding and skiing.
“I’ve grown up with skiing, and I just really have a passion for it, and I wanted to be a part of something like that,” Yelton said.
When Yelton and Ricke realized they shared the same passion for winter sports, it was clear Snowtoppers could become a reality, they said.
Yelton said she feels the club can provide an outlet and sense of unity for students.
“Our club is all inclusive,” Ricke said. “Literally anyone can join it, whether you know how to ski or snowboard or if you don’t.”
The club will travel to Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on Friday, Feb. 7 to attend “college night” from 4 p.m. to midnight. Students can show their student ID to the staff and receive a discount on a lift ticket for the evening.
The University of Kentucky, University of Cincinnati and University of Miami Ohio will also have their school’s snowboarding clubs at the event.
“I hope this club becomes the biggest RSO (registered student organization) on campus, and I hope it becomes the most fun,” Ricke said.
