Pitt Derryberry, co-chair of the Department of Psychology, has died, according to an email from Corinne Murphy, dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, to all faculty and staff Thursday morning.
“Pitt was one of the finest Hilltoppers to have graced our Hill and he will be greatly missed,” Murphy said.
Derryberry became a professor at WKU in 2001. He had a scholarly focus on moral development in adolescence with emphases on judgment and self-understanding.
Derryberry received his bachelor’s degree from Eckerd College in 1992 and earned a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology, with a major in human development, from the University of Alabama in 2001.
While on the Hill, Derryberry worked his way up the ranks and became co-chair of the Department of Psychology.
“His thoughtful and calm demeanor guided our students, as well as our faculty and staff, through department and college transitions, through the pandemic and tornadoes, and through budget challenges and personnel shortages,” Murphy said in the email. “We will continue his work and lean on his example to guide our decision-making in support of our students.”
