WKU Baseball will look to continue its 10-game win streak Tuesday at home against the Southern Illinois Salukis.
The Hilltoppers are coming off a four-game weekend sweep against UNC Asheville. The sweep took WKU’s record to 15-1, which is tied for the best start in program history with the 1928 team which played only 16 games.
The Hilltoppers are perfect at home with a 14-0 record at Nick Denes Field. They will look to keep that streak intact against an SIU team that enters the matchup with an 11-3 record and also have a 10-game win streak.
Junior Joe Siervo made his presence felt at the plate during the UNC Asheville series. Siervo crushed a three-run home run in game one, helping WKU jump out to an early lead. He followed it up with an even bigger moment in game two, hitting a walk-off, three-run homer enforcing the run rule in a 17-5 victory.
WKU’s pitching has been key to its success. The Hilltoppers currently have the third-best ERA in all of Division I with a 2.29 ERA.
Over the four-game sweep of UNC Asheville, the Hilltoppers staff allowed just 12 runs while striking out 30 batters. Senior Treyson Peters set the tone in game one, going 5.2 innings, holding UNC Asheville to two hits and striking out five.
SIU of the Missouri Valley Conference will provide another test for the Hilltoppers as the Salukis enter the matchup averaging five runs a game. The Salukis are coming off a three-game weekend sweep against Bellarmine. In the series, SIU scored 44 runs and ended two games by run rule.
With both teams carrying 10-game win streaks, the non-conference clash at Nick Denes Field has the makings of a must-watch matchup. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
