WKU track and field will compete on its home track Friday and Saturday in the Brent Chumbley Memorial Hilltopper Relays.
The Hilltoppers are coming off the Margaret Simmons Invitational at Murray State University. The Men’s team placed second in the meet while the women just missed the podium as fourth.
Junior sprinter Jayden Freeman took first in the 100m dash with a time of 10.49, followed by fellow Hilltopper sprinter, freshman Zachariah Taylor, with a mark of 10.67.
Sophomore Devon Rogers placed first in the Javelin Throw with a distance of 54.15m. The Hilltoppers had three of the top four athletes in the Men’s Discus with junior thrower Luke Stegman taking first with a distance of 50.93m.
The event previously known as the Hilltopper Relays was renamed on March 4., following the death of Chumbley, the director of the WKU Cross Country and Track & Field programs, on Jan. 31.
“Renaming the Hilltopper Relays to the Brent Chumbley Memorial Hilltopper Relays will be a special way to both remember and honor Coach Chumbley and the impact he had on the Track & Field program,” Athletic Director Todd Stewart said in a WKU Athletics press release on March 4.
Along with the Hilltoppers, three other teams will be at the Charles M. Ruter track facility including Brescia, Bellarmine, and Belmont. The meet kicks off at 11 a.m. on Friday with the men’s hammer throw. The Hilltoppers will also honor seniors at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Along with the competition, the jersey of former track and field standout Gayle Harris Watkins will be retired on Saturday. The ceremony is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.
