WKU Volleyball hosted the annual Alyssa Cavanaugh Classic this weekend, sweeping all three games on the weekend.
Bradley
The Hilltoppers opened the classic sweeping Bradley.
WKU took set one 25-16. It was back and forth for most of the set. The Hilltoppers gained momentum late and never looked back. Back-to-back aces from sophomore outside hitter Faith Young spearheaded the 6-1 run to end the set.
WKU took set two 28-26. Neither team wanted to give in, having an answer for everything. Much like WKU in the first set, Bradley rallied momentum late, taking a 20-17 lead. After a ball was counted in for the Braves, a crucial successful WKU challenge that overturned the original play made it a 23-21 Bradley lead, swaying the momentum fully to the Hilltoppers. An attack error from Bradley gave the set to WKU.
WKU took set three and the match 25-20. The Hilltoppers had all the answers for Bradley in the set. WKU jumped out to a 6-0 lead and did not look back. The Braves looked to get back in it, but the swings of WKU were too much for Bradley.
Indiana
The Lady Toppers kept their momentum, sweeping the Hoosiers 3-0 to close out their Friday night.
WKU took set one 25-23. It was a back-and-forth start to the set, with neither team able to gain any momentum. Freshman outside hitter Kiara Knox fueled the Hilltopper offense, erasing a 17-13 deficit with a 4-0 run. Both teams continued trading points until a kill from Knox put the set away.
WKU took set two 25-20. Despite a slow start, the Hilltoppers went on an early 6-0 run and did not look back. WKU continued to run the offense through Knox, finishing the set with eight kills. With sophomore libero Taylor Baron behind the service line, WKU put the set away.
WKU took set three and the match 28-26. Both teams had an answer for one another, with neither team gaining any momentum. Attack after attack, neither team would budge. Late in the set, kill leader Knox went down with an injury. However, they were able to rally, taking the set and match.
Austin Peay
Knox did not return to the court in the Hilltoppers’ sweep against Austin Peay after suffering a knee injury against Indiana.
WKU took set one 25-18. Sophomore outside hitter Alivia Skidmore opened the scoring, giving the Hilltoppers an early lead. Despite the early momentum for the Hilltoppers, APSU had an answer and the set became a back-and-forth trade. Strong blocks from the Hilltoppers and an error from APSU put an end to the set.
WKU took set two 25-14. The Hilltoppers took an early lead and kept the momentum. WKU had an answer for every Governor attack, and continued to carry the set with strong blocking. A block from freshman setter Kate Rush and junior middle hitter Gabby Weihe put the set away.
WKU took set three 25-13. Skidmore once again opened the attack for the Hilltoppers. The set quickly became a back-and-forth despite the early lead. Several attack and service errors from APSU paved the way for Hilltopper victory. A service ace from sophomore defensive specialist Camila Adams put away the set and match
