Freshman Sara Camp blows out a flaming marshmallow outside the Preston Center on April 29, 2019. WKU ORAC hosted the event and supplied the fire and ingredients for s’mores.

Coconut, chocolate, various candy bars, graham crackers and marshmallows were all items found outside of the Preston Center’s annual event, "Front Porch S’mores" on Monday. The event was put on by the Outdoor Recreation and Adventure Center (ORAC) and is described on WKU’s events website as ORAC’s “most popular event.”

Students stopped by to participate in the event and have the opportunity to make their own chocolate treat.

Briana Fellows, a senior from Bowling Green, said she was surprised by the free s’mores.

“I literally just dropped off my boyfriend at the gym and was just walking by, and they asked me if I wanted to make a s’more,” Fellows said.

ORAC drew the community in with the event’s central campus location and activities, especially for people walking by who were did not suspect the event was going on.

“I think it’s cute,” Kyra Heinrichs, a freshman from Elizabethtown, said. “I think it’s a good way to bring people in and meet new people, and I love s’mores.”

ORAC staff member Jill Matthews said she could not exactly recall when when the annual even first began but was a good way to reach out to students and wrap up the spring semester.

“At least three years,” Matthews said. “[The event] is just kind of to get the community involved like, the campus community, learn about ORAC, have fun and de-stress.”
