WHY WORK FOR THE HERALD?

Students who produce the Herald are honing skills that give them a competitive edge when entering the work place. They learn to gather information, write, edit, produce, photograph, sell and design. More important, they learn to make judgments and decisions, and they learn to take responsibility for those decisions.

WHAT IS THE COLLEGE HEIGHTS HERALD?

The College Heights Herald is a professional news organization operated by college students.Through a twice-weekly print edition, a continuously updated website at wkuherald.com, social media and apps for mobile devices, the Herald provides readers with accurate, fair and balanced articles that meet the highest professional standards. Founded in 1925, the Herald is the main source of WKU news and events for students, faculty, staff and alumni. It is recognized nationally as one of the top college news organizations. The Herald has won 15 national Pacemaker awards and five Gold Crown awards.

COMMITMENTS

Working for the College Heights Herald requires a time commitment. While most staffers are paid, this is a job, and editors and managers will expect you to complete your assignments in a timely fashion. Please answer the following questions to help us determine how much time you can commit to the newspaper.

WHAT WE OFFER

Positions and responsibilities change each semester depending on the needs and talents of the staff, but below are a general idea of the positions available. News and sports staffs are typically organized around beats, which require a greater time commitment, but they also offer general assignment positions.***NEW FOR THE FALL 2016 SEMESTER**: We're expanding our commitment to digital news by establishing a digital staff. This staff will provide 24/7 coverage of our campus and community and will work outside the typical print schedule. PLEASE CHOOSE POSITION(S) YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN FROM THE LISTS BELOW:

• Now that you’ve read through available positions, tell us the top three choices you’re interested in.

SCHEDULE

• The Herald covers many stories on the weekends. In a month how often do you typically travel on the weekend? For example, how often do you leave Bowling Green and spend the weekends in your hometown?

• List any experience relevant to the position(s) you are applying for including high school, college and professional. Attached resume preferable.

Please answer the following questions to help editors and managers determine where you will best fit in on the Herald staff. (If necessary attach a separate sheet of paper.)

REFERENCES

Please list three people, not your family, who can serve as references. These people could include high school teachers, professors or former employers who can attest to the quality of your work. Journalism references are preferred, but any former employer or teacher will do. Please include their name, title, telephone number and e-mail address.

CLIPS

If you are applying for a writing, design, photography or a cartoonist position, please include three samples of your work. If you do not have samples that have been published, please include samples that have been completed for class or in leisure time. Please attach them to your application. Applications that do not include some type of sample may not be reviewed.

Applications are reviewed in a timely manner. Staff positions are highly sought after and competitive, if you are not hired at first, don’t fret. The Herald hires for positions throughout the semester if they become available. Stop by the office periodically to see if a position is open. Persistence pays off.
