Serrano included a personal connection in his speech by reflecting back on 5-year-old Burt Brumett who was killed in a car accident on Scott Way here in Bowling Green in the 80s. Brumett’s mother fought tirelessly to have a stoplight placed in that location but to no avail resulting in the death of Serrano’s cousin who was hit by a car in the same spot on March 30, 2016. “Change did not happen for their family and for this community,” Serrano said, “At the end of the day these are our lives we are fighting for.”
