Efforts are being made to deal with mold discovered recently in two residence halls while the demolition of another residence hall is expected to begin this summer.

After water leakage in Bemis Lawrence Hall was investigated, mold was discovered in the plumbing chase of the building, according to an email from Director of Media Relations Bob Skipper. Plumbing chase is a false wall used to prevent pipes from being exposed. The area is “only accessible by small fixed panels and encapsulated” with on air flow. Due to this design, the mold was no detected by previous testing.

Bemis Lawrence Hall is to be demolished this summer to make room for the upcoming Freshman Village. There is not date set for that demolition to start currently, Skipper said.

Barnes Campbell Hall and Minton Hall were investigated for mold after the discover in Bemis Lawrence Hall. Mold was found in the same place, and the necessary renovations should begin soon.

“Work in both halls will be completed in early August,” Skipper said.
