Lady Toppers Sweep Lipscomb on the Road
September 13, 2017
WKU picked up its sixth straight win on Tuesday evening, sweeping Lipscomb in Nashville in three sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-23).
The Lady Toppers (10-2) turned in a great defensive performance, posting 14.0 blocks as a team including eight apiece from Sydney Engle and Amara Listenbee.
“We haven’t been as good offensively in our last few matches, but we’ve really risen to the occasion with our blocking,” WKU head coach Travis Hudson said in a post-game press release. “While tonight’s third set did not go as well, in my opinion, we were fortunate enough to get out of there in three sets tonight because we certainly did not finish strong.”
Alyssa Cavanaugh picked up where she left off after earning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors for her performance in the Holiday Inn University Plaza Invitational. The senior tallied 14 kills while hitting at a .417 clip on Tuesday evening.
Jessica Lucas, who picked up C-USA Setter of the Week honors for the second consecutive week, picked up 26 assists while posting nine digs to lead the Lady Toppers.
The Bison (4-5) out-killed the Lady Toppers 38-36 but WKU made up for that defensively by out-blocking Lipscomb 14.0-3.0.
The Lady Toppers will continue the six-game road stretch as they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State University. WKU will face the host Buckeyes on Friday morning at 11 a.m., Dayton at 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon and will close with Northern Illinois on Saturday at noon.
“We’re in the toughest stretch of our schedule and to get two really important wins to start this stretch takes a little pressure off of us but also gives us some momentum,” Hudson said. “We’re looking forward to getting to Columbus to keep playing.”
