Fellow American Dana Vollmer won gold in the event, swimming the finals in a world record 55.98 seconds.

Chinaโ€™s Lu Ying won silver while Australiaโ€™s Alicia Coutts won bronze.

Donahue may still have another chance to win an Olympic medal, as she is expected be a part of the US 4ร—100 medley relay team on Friday.

Former WKU track athlete Bernd Hermann remains the only Topper athlete to medal in the Olympics.

Hermann won a bronze medal in the 4ร—400 meter relay for West Germany in the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
