Several musical ensembles performed in Van Meter Hall auditorium Thursday night.

The Greenwood High School band kicked off the evening with two pieces: “Lux Aurumque” and “Galop.”

The WKU concert band, conducted by assistant professor of music Jeff Bright, played a total four songs including “Gathering the Ranks at Hebron” and “Ouachita.”

The WKU wind ensemble, conducted by associate music professor Gary Schallert, performed four songs as well. They ended their performance with “Angels in the Architecture.”

“It’s a brand new piece and it’s just a great piece to end the show with,” Schallert said.

The work is performed as a dramatic conflict between good and evil. The angel, performed by a soprano, establishes the divine.

In opposition, the music speeds up as a symbol of darkness and death. The work ends with the angel singing again more powerfully than before.

Schallert said students began practicing for the concert after the PRISM Concert at the end of January.

“I think it went well,” he said. “The students have been working hard on this.”

Jeff Smith, technical director, said everything went smoothly, which was helped by the newly renovated Van Meter.

“We have some of the best of the best,” he said, referring to the auditorium.

The Greenwood High School band performed with the wind ensemble to close the concert.

This marks the second year a high school has come to a concert and performed with the ensemble, Schallert said. They hope to make it a tradition.

“We just like to reach out to the community and do collaborative things with local schools,” he said. “It’s important to us from a professional standpoint and it really helps with recruiting.”
