Jaycees Pavilion was so crowded that it was difficult to move Thursday night at Sigma Chi’s seventh annual Battle of the Greeks.

Duke Laha, an organizer for the event, estimated about 1,100 people were packed into the pavilion, with shouting and loud music blearing from the speakers and an ambulance on call in case of serious injuries.

There were a total of 12 fights with weight classes from feather weight to heavy weight.

Colby Osborne, a Fiji member, earned the first knockout of the night.

Osborne said this was “a fight for Fiji” and that he can’t wait to move on to the next round.

“It’s a great feeling,” he said. “That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to get off to a great start and get a win. Hopefully, this isn’t the end.”

Laha said that most of the proceeds from the event will go to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation and they are considering donating to relief efforts in Japan.

He said the event was going more smoothly than last year’s because Sigma Chi prepared much better this time.

“It’s more organized and it’s going better already,” he said early in the night.

The championships are Friday night, and in addition to the fighting, Laha said they would be showing the NCAA basketball tournament game in order to attract more people.
