SOURCE: Former UF coach Azzanni hired as offensive coordinator
February 24, 2011
WKU football has found the final piece of its coaching puzzle.
A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Herald Thursday that Zach Azzanni has been offered and accepted a position as WKU’s offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach.
Although the situation isn’t final, and the source said the Toppers are still “discussing scenarios,” this creates more transition with the staff already in place.
The source said Azzanni’s hire doesn’t mean Taggart will fully hand over the offense, as Taggart will still call offensive plays.
At the same time, the source said former receivers coach Terry Obee will become running backs coach, and Taggart will coach the quarterbacks himself.
Taggart handled WKU’s running backs last season.
The source said that much like new defensive backs coach Alonzo Hampton, both hires have yet to officially clear WKU’s human resources department and thus can’t be formally announced yet.
Azzanni was most recently the receivers coach at Florida in 2010 and previously had coaching stints at Central Michigan and Bowling Green.
The job opened when Mike Sanford, WKU’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, left for Stanford on Feb. 16 to coach the running backs.
It appears there will not be a passing game coordinator title on staff for 2011, although the Toppers will add the offensive coordinator role that Taggart assumed in his first season.
