Firehouse Festival this weekend

October supports several causes among those being National Breast Cancer Awareness month and Domestic Violence Awareness month. But an additional, and maybe not as well known fact is that October is also National Fire Safety Month.

The Bowling Green Fire Department is hosting its seventh annual Firehouse Festival this Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. in Home Depot’s parking lot.

The store is located at 2233 Gary Farms Blvd.

Marlee Boenig, the coordinator of the event, said they are providing the community with the chance to learn about fire safety.

“Fire Prevention is one month that the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) pushes to educate people about fire safety,” she said.

The event is free to the public and will include equipment demonstrations, balloons, refreshments, firemen, an interactive robot, and a stimulated car crash, Boenig said.

“We try to make it family friendly,” she said. “The way the economy is, you want free events and this is one of them.”

Boenig, the Bowling Green Fire Department spokeswoman, said she hopes that people familiarize themselves with potential fire risks.

“I think people take fire safety for granted so much because we all think that it will happen to someone else and we get complacent,” she said.
