Alvarez remains as passionate about the Rose Bowl as he was as an assistant coach at Iowa in 1982, when he made his first appearance in the game, a 28-0 loss to Washington. He returned with Iowa in 1986, losing to UCLA, 45-28, before beating UCLA twice with UW: 21-16 in 1994 and 38-31 in 1999.”
