WKU Tennis starts year off strong at UC/Pam Whitehead Invitational

WKU Tennis sophomore Samantha Martinez was a perfect 3-0 in singles play during the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana on Oct. 2-3.

WKU Tennis competed in its first invitational of the season over the weekend, going head-to-head against Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green and host Cincinnati at the UC/Pam Whitehead Invitational at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

WKU turned in a 11-7 record in singles matches and went 4-5 in doubles. WKU’s Cora-Lynn von Dungern split the singles title with Ioana Guna of Cincinnati and Bowling Green’s Ioanna Tsodari.

Laura Bernardos, Paola Cortez, Samantha Martinez and Alexis Cramer all went 2-1 in singles as well, capping off a strong opening showing for the red and white. Bernardos and Martinez led the way in doubles competition, putting together a 2-1 record.

The Lady Toppers defeated Bowling Green 2-1 in doubles and swept Miami (Ohio) 6-0 in singles during the first day of competition on Friday.

“We had a total team effort against Miami of Ohio in singles, sweeping them in all 1-through-6 positions,” head coach Greg Davis said in a press release.

The Lady Toppers put together another strong day on Saturday, taking down Miami (Ohio) 2-1 in doubles play and trumping Bowling Green 4-2 in singles.

WKU Tennis will take a break from competition until Oct. 1-3 when the program travels to Indianapolis, Indiana for the Butler Invitational. Full results from the UC/Pam Whitehead Invitational can be found below:
