Linden’s Cut: the Top 10 best films of 2022
January 25, 2023
2022 is officially over and what an insane year it has been. From graduating high school to attending advance screenings to completing a full semester of college, 2022 has also delivered some great films that deserved to be talked about. Here are my 10 favorite films of 2022.
10. Bullet Train
Kicking off this list is my most underrated film of the year. I’m baffled why this has a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes because this was an entertaining ride that was worth the ticket price. It’s over the top in a thrilling way.
9. Avatar: The Way of Water
The 13 year wait was absolutely worth it with its stunning visuals, beautiful cinematography, and epic scale. I’m excited to see what James Cameron has in store for Avatar 3.
8. Till
Moving now from a big blockbuster to a small but important drama, this heartbreaking story is elevated by Danielle Deadwyler’s powerful performance. Although I’m disappointed she did not get an Oscar nomination, her performance is truly one of a kind.
7. She Said
Another important story that demands to be seen, Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan give superb performances in a thrilling story about the takedown of Harvey Weinstein. This joins along the reigns of Spotlight and All the President’s Men in which they focus on journalists exposing a scandal.
6. The Fabelmans
His most personal film to date, Steven Spielberg delivers another masterclass in filmmaking. Heartfelt, inspiring and moving, The Fabelmans is a must-see for film lovers or for fans of Spielberg.
5. Everything Everywhere All At Once
What can I say about this movie that hasn’t been said already? It’s bonkers, brilliant, exciting, thrilling, absurd, weird, amazing, entertaining, heartfelt, strange all at once. It’s insane to believe that this movie even exists because if I had to simply describe it in one word, wow.
4. Scream
It may come as a shocker to a lot of people but I have not seen any of the Scream movies other than this. Having said that, I had a blast with this movie. Even though this is the 5th installment, I was never confused and could follow the plot. It’s rare for a January film to be on a top 10 list because most January films aren’t well received.
3. Barbarian
The best horror film of 2022, Barbarian is an unpredictable ride in the best way possible. It’s scary, wild, and genuinely terrifying. You can read more in my full-length review of this movie.
2. The Batman
Over the years Batman has been portrayed so many times that counting it is like counting every guest that has been on Ellen. We’ve had Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney, Bale, Affleck and now Pattinson. At first he got the Daniel Craig treatment, meaning there was initially backlash about his casting, but once the film came out, Pattinson’s performance was widely praised. He portrays Batman more so as a detective and this film comes off like a detective crime thriller more than just a superhero movie. Although it is 176 minutes and it feels that long, it never drags and it is riveting from start to finish.
1. Top Gun: Maverick
There are simply not enough words to describe how much I love this film. Normally I see films in theaters once or sometimes twice. I saw this six times in theaters and each trip was worth it. It is a sequel that’s superior over its good predecessor. It has thrilling flying sequences done in real jets that look incredible but also has some heartfelt dramatic moments, such as the scene with Iceman and Maverick. It is scenes like this that remind us why we go to the movies.
