The Potter College of Arts & Letters will host an online streaming event titled “Places of Power” to show Black American history through dance, music and spoken word at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The event will be live streamed on @wkupcal on Instagram.

WKU staff members Tiffany Bostic-Brown, Alan White, Meghen McKinley and PCAL Dean Terrance Brown are all performers in the event.

“Our purpose is to be here and be seen,” Bostic-Brown said. “Representation and support are some of the most important aspects to feel a sense of belonging.”

Brown and Bostic-Brown will demonstrate the spoken place of power, White will demonstrate writing and spoken word and McKinley will demonstrate music and movement, Bostic-Brown said.

“’Places of Power’ has taken shape in many different forms by different names,”  Bostic-Brown said. “The livestream aspect came to be when our in-person formats of performance were put on hold due to COVID-19.”

The event is staying as a livestream this year in order to reach a wider audience and be more accessible, Bostic-Brown said.

“Dean Brown and I have always pushed for more representation in our field of classical music but made a more concerted effort in the past few years to help confront the history and present day reality of racial inequality and injustice,” Bostic-Brown said.

Bostic-Brown explained the purpose of the event is to bring representation and support to Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities by using their different “voices.”

“Seeing someone that might look like you, singing or moving to music, or hearing words that are written by someone who might have had a shared life experience, can give you a sense of safety, support and acceptance,” Bostic-Brown said.
