The WKU English Club will host its first open mic event of the semester on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in Cherry Hall room 125.

This event will allow students and faculty to showcase their own works in front of a live audience.

Jarek Jarvis, organizer of the event, said the idea of an open mic event was organized after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I saw that there was a bit of void left after COVID and decided to start organizing and hosting an open mic to fill it,” Jarvis said.

Jarvis said he works closely with the English Club to promote the event.

“Events like this are important because they give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to express themselves,” Jarvis said. “Many of the folks who come to perform would have little to no other local options to showcase their creative work.”

Jarvis explained the open mic event is open to anyone interested, and they can perform anything they have created. While their flyer advertises the event for poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction, all works five minutes and under are welcome, Jarvis said.

“Seeing the wide variety of writing that exists in the world at open mics has often offered me a great deal of inspiration and motivation to write and improve my own work,” Jarvis said. “We welcome anyone who would like to share their creative work with the world.”
