The WKU Student Government Association hosted their first meeting of the fall semester on Tuesday, which included nominating members to Judicial Council and as committee heads.
WKU students Ashley Ranger, Anna Kate Hardin, Ellen Henderson, Morgan Gammons and Garrison Reed were all nominated by Student Body President Sam Kurtz to serve on the 2023-2024 Judicial Council.
“We had a record number of people that were interested in being on JC (Judicial Council), so over the summer we did interviews with each of our applicants, it was an extremely hard process,” Kurtz said. “We ended up narrowing it down to five people.”
Kurtz also announced the new senators that would be leading as committee heads for this year.
“I was nominated for Campus Improvements and Sustainability Committee. I was on committee last year serving as a secretary,” Rush Robinson, new committee head, said. “I think we’ve got a lot going, so I am happily prepared to serve in this position.”
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee nominee Karley Solorzano felt strongly about enacting positive change on campus.
“As committee head I will dedicate myself to creating an atmosphere where all students can find their place here at WKU,” Solorzano said. “I’m someone who believes we can all learn something from one another which is why I value diversity and inclusion in all aspects of life.”
The following senators will serve as the heads of the remaining committees: Meghan Pierce for Legislative Operations Committee, Anne-Marie Wright for Student Experience and Enrollment Committee, Griffin Plumb for Outreach and Student Experience Committee, Maiah Cisco for Community Relations Committee and Callison Padgett for Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee.
The SGA Executive Board took a moment to introduce themselves to the new members of SGA and welcome both new and returning into a new school year.
“SGA has become an organization that is highly sought after. There is someone on campus who wants to be in your (the senators’) seat right now,” Sydney Denney, speaker of the senate, said. “So that means we have to do everything to uphold the qualifications of being a senator or being a committee head.”
The meeting ended with the newly appointed committee members and Judicial Council members taking the oath of office and being sworn into their new position.
