The Lady Toppers went down to Jacksonville, Alabama to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Sunday afternoon at the Jacksonville State Soccer Complex, where the game ended in a 1-1 draw. This leaves WKU still undefeated in conference play while Jacksonville State is winless with two draws.
The game was very defensive, a gritty trench game. The first goal came in the 77th minute by graduate Katie Erwin, giving her five on the season. Then with under a minute to play, Jacksonville State junior Laleh Lonteen tied the game. The Gamecocks were smothered by the WKU defense, only able to muster four shots and two shots on goal. WKU had nine shots and three shots on goal but were only able to turn one of those into points.
The Lady Toppers defense has been stonewalling opponents all season, with only one goal and four shots on goal in the last two games. The defense has been a very key role in keeping games close and forcing draws instead of losses. As the season heats up, this defense will have to keep up their strong play if they want to make moves in the C-USA conference pool. `
The Lady Toppers get a few days rest before continuing conference play when they host the FIU Panthers on September 29th. WKU has won the last eight matches against the Panthers, including a 1-0 win last season.
