Lady Toppers take the win at Jacksonville State

WKU Women’s Basketball extended its winning streak to four games Saturday, with a 62-52 win at Jacksonville State.

The win brings the Lady Toppers to 3-0 in C-USA play and 12-6 on the season. 

WKU jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in a back-and-forth first quarter. The Gamecocks responded by tying it at nine midway through the first before WKU closed the period with a 15-12 advantage. 

The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter as both teams scored eight in the period, resulting in a 23-20 halftime score. 

The Lady Toppers opened the first five minutes of the second half with a 8-0 run. The Gamecocks responded with a 16-9 run to close out the third with a score of 40-36. 

WKU dominated the final period, taking a 20-point lead at one point, and claiming a 62-52 victory over the Gamecocks. 

The Lady Toppers outshot the Gamecocks 41% to 33% from the field and 25% to 13% from three. 

WKU also dominated the turnover battle, scoring 19 points off of turnovers as opposed to three by the Gamecocks.  

Junior Alexis Mead and Senior Destiny Salary led the way for the Lady Toppers offensively. Mead tallied 18 points, five assists and four rebounds. Salary scored 17 to go along with six rebounds. 

WKU will return home to Diddle Arena Jan. 18 to take on New Mexico State University at 6:30 p.m. CT.
