Despite a slow start for both teams, the defense of WKU Women’s Basketball overwhelmed Lee University as the Lady Toppers won 70-48 Tuesday night in their first and only exhibition game.
FIRST HALF
It was a slow start for both sides as they were tied at four a piece at the five minute mark of the first quarter. Neither team found the bottom of the net as Lee University led the Lady Toppers 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, WKU turned defense into offense, jumping out to a 10-2 run behind two three pointers from graduate senior Alexis Mead. It was all Lady Toppers as Lee University scored just four points due to the suffocating full court defense. WKU went into halftime leading the Flames 29-18 behind 11 points behind Mead.
SECOND HALF
Lee University came out with all of the energy forcing three early turnovers which turned into five quick points. Despite the quick start by the Flames, WKU neutralized it as they were able to get to the basket with ease. The Lady Toppers went into the fourth quarter with a 45-37 lead.
In the fourth quarter the Lady Toppers came out hitting two early three pointers to extend their lead to 14. WKU was able to get out and run due to turnovers by Lee University which led to four easy points. It was ultimately the active hands of the Lady Toppers that played dividends as they had 16 steals. Despite the threes falling for Lee University, WKU was too much as they secured the victory 70-48.
WKU will open their regular season next Monday, Nov. 4 where they will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana to take on the Indiana State Sycamores.
