In the DSU Nite Class, 29 WKU Greek organizations met to wrap Christmas gifts for 33 children sponsored through the Angel Tree program.
According to its website, the Angel Tree program is an extension of the Salvation Army where donors purchase Christmas gifts for underprivileged children and senior citizens.
Andrew Rash, the associate director of Student Activities, said this is the fourth year WKU Greek organizations have worked with the Angel Tree program.
Rash said philanthropy is at the core of many fraternities and sororities and the holidays make a perfect time to give back to the community.
“It’s a festive time of year, so it’s just a nice, nice thing that we can all do together,” Rash said.
Caden Prigge, a junior economics major and member of Kappa Alpha, said honoring the teachings of Jesus is at the core of the fraternity’s values.
Those values make Christmas and charity an important intersection for Kappa Alpha, he said.
“A big thing for our chapter is we honor God and the ladies, and honoring God as loving your neighbor as yourself,” Prigge said. “So when someone’s down and needs a hand up, you know, that’s a big important thing for us.”
Alena Jordan, a junior majoring in agriculture and agribusiness and member of Sigma Alpha, said before college, she and her parents would participate in Angel Tree.
Jordan said she always enjoyed helping kids who weren’t as privileged as her around Christmas time. She said she was glad she could continue to work with Angel Tree as part of her sorority.
“When I was given this opportunity, I was really excited about it, and it was great to enjoy that feeling with my sisters as well,” Jordan said.
