The WKU Student Government Association is partnering with Student Activities to host a toy drive from Nov. 20 through Dec. 3 for the Boys & Girls Club of Bowling Green.
SGA passed Bill 20-24-F during its last meeting on Nov. 19. The bill allocates $200 for extra toys for the toy drive.
Students can drop off donated toys for children ages 3 through 16 in the SGA or Student Activities offices in DSU. One service hour will be awarded per toy, with a maximum cap of five service hours for those seeking community service opportunities.
Savanna Kurtz, sophomore communication disorders major and SGA senator, helped create the bill for the toy drive. Kurtz helped with the toy drive last year when she was on the Community Relations Committee and witnessed its success.
“It was truly amazing getting to see the staff’s smiles as we brought in all of the toys last year,” Kurtz said.
Kurtz said the approved $200 ensures children from all age groups get toys.
“This money is helpful to even out the number of toys we have for certain age groups,” Kurtz said. “For example, we could hypothetically get a lot of girl toys for ages 6 through 8, but hardly any for boys ages 10 through 12. The $200 allows us to bridge the number gap and ensure that every child is accounted for.”
Kurtz said donating to the toy drive can connect students to the Bowling Green community.
“The bond WKU has with the community is something that makes Bowling Green so beautiful,” Kurtz continued. Donating in the toy drive gives students an opportunity to connect with the community by fostering a sense of compassion and empathy.”
Kurtz said she hopes SGA continues to support children in the Boys and Girls Club by hosting the toy drive in the future.
“The local Bowling Green children are so deserving and appreciative of the gifts that come directly from the WKU community,” Kurtz said. “It would be incredible if this toy drive could be continued in years to come.”
