WKU Women’s Basketball kept their unbeaten season alive Sunday with a 79-60 win over Miami (Ohio) at Diddle Arena.
With the win, the Hilltoppers improved to a 7-0 record. According to a press release from WKU Athletics, the start is the second-best in program history, tied with the 1987-1988 team.
“The most rewarding part is looking down and seeing 17 assists, looking down and seeing 20 plus forced turnovers almost every single night and looking down and seeing different players lead the team in different categories,” Head Coach Greg Collins said on the Lady Toppers’ strong start.”
Guard Alexis Mead exploded for 24 points on 4-for-6 shooting from three and guard Josie Gilvin took over with 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
FIRST HALF
The first quarter was a dominant affair, with the Lady Toppers never relinquishing the lead and taking a 23-8 lead at the end of the quarter. Mead took over with 10 points to set the tone, and Gilvin added seven more.
In what has been a trend this season, WKU struggled on offense in the second quarter, with the Redhawks fighting back to bring it within nine at halftime, 38-29. Guard Destiny Salary scored six points and Gilvin scored four more in a breakout performance early.
SECOND HALF
True to form this season, the Lady Toppers dominated in the third quarter, turning a nine-point lead into a 30-point blowout. WKU scored 36 points in the third, fueled by eight three pointers from five players. Mead led the way with 12 points, and Gilvin continued her dominance with 10 more.
The Lady Toppers closed out the Redhawks in the fourth, taking the game despite only scoring five points in the quarter. Guard Mackenzie Chatfield hit a three to stop a scoring drought, and Salary hit a layup with three minutes left to finish it.
WKU will look to keep the momentum alive with a trip to Wichita State on Sunday, Dec. 8.
