A WKU student was fatally shot after mistakenly entering the wrong apartment early Sunday morning, according to the Bowling Green Police Department.
BGPD responded to a reported burglary in progress Sunday around 1 a.m. at the Covington Oaks apartment complex. The resident reported someone, later identified as 23-year-old Matthew Maggart, was kicking their apartment door.
Maggart then entered the apartment, where he was shot and killed by the resident, the post states.
Evidence from the ongoing investigation suggests Maggart, who lived at the complex, was “impaired” and entered the wrong apartment mistakenly, according to BGPD.
WKU Chief of Police Mitch Walker provided a statement regarding the incident.
“We have been made aware of a student death that occurred at an off-campus apartment complex,” Walker said. “While the Bowling Green Police Department is leading the investigation, WKU is working directly with students who may be most affected by this loss. We encourage any member of our campus community in need of grief support to seek help from the WKU Counseling Center by calling 270-745-3159. We extend our deepest condolences to Matthew’s family, friends and all those who knew him.”
