Abdelgawad wins Lady Toppers’ first weekly award of season

Freshman guard Meral Abdelgawad has been named Conference USA Freshman of the Week. The award is the first of her career on the Hill and the first weekly award won by any of the Lady Toppers this season.

Abdelgawad received the award on the heels of her solid performance in the Lady Toppers’ win against Union on Saturday. She finished the game with 26 points and missed only three of her combined 19 shots from the field and the free-throw line.

The performance was the highest-scoring game by any Lady Topper this season, as well as the highest-scoring game by any freshman in C-USA. Abdelgawad is the first WKU player to win the award since Raneem Elgedawy won it on Jan. 22.
