The Student Government Association will hold its first meeting of the semester on Tuesday, focusing on the process of becoming a senator and enacting legislation.

This will be the first meeting led by SGA president Andi Dahmer. At the meeting, Dahmer said she will inform candidates of the election process to become an SGA senator.

Dahmer, a junior, said she hopes many students who want to learn more about SGA as an organization will attend to learn more about the organization’s committees and the goals of those committees for the upcoming year.

Through SGA, any student can write legislation and join a committee, even if he or she is not elected as a senator, according to Dahmer. The Senate Committees include Student Affairs, Legislative Research, Academic Affairs, Campus Improvements, Public Relations, SGA S.A.V.E.S., or Standing Against Violence and for Ending Self-Harm, and the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion, formerly known as the MyCampusToo Task Force.

“I hope that this year we have great levels of student involvement and participation across all areas of our campus community,” Dahmer said.

Executive Vice President Savannah Molyneaux and Administrative Vice President Kara Lowry, who ran with Dahmer in the SGA elections last semester, will also speak at Tuesday’s meeting. This will be the first meeting with Molyneaux and Lowry on the executive board.

Molyneaux, a junior, said that the executive board will detail their goals for the organization at the meeting and that the meeting will help set the tone for the rest of the year.

“We are really hoping to gain a lot of new voices in SGA,” Molyneaux said.

Lowry, a junior, said she is “really excited” about the meeting.

“We have been working hard this summer to get everything up and running,” said Lowry. “I’m also excited to meet the new senators and for the fall elections to fill the remaining senator positions.”

The meeting will be at 5 p.m. in the Student Senate Chambers, on the second floor of Downing Student Union. The meeting is open to anyone who wants to attend.
