Lady Toppers battle back, but fall 85-77 at Ball State

The WKU Lady Topper basketball team fell to 5-3 on the season after dropping a close contest 85-77 at Ball State in Muncie, Ind.

Much like the Lady Toppers’ game against Morehead State last Sunday, WKU was cold to begin the game, shooting just 6-of-26 from the field in the first 17 minutes of the game and trailed 40-22 at halftime. The Lady Toppers shot 26.5 percent from the field in the first half.

Senior guard Bianca McGee, who led the Lady Toppers with seven points in the first half, drained a three-pointer to begin the second half.

A 6-0 Lady Topper run cut the Ball State lead to nine before a three-pointer from sophomore guard Micah Jones cut it to just six with 12:29 remaining. Jones leads the Sun Belt conference in made three-pointers.

A free throw by sophomore forward Kendall Noble tied the game before back-to-back three-pointers by McGee gave the Lady Toppers a six-point lead with 9:42 remaining in the game.

Ball State battled back to tie it at 68 before belting off a 5-0 run with 4:16 remaining en route to securing an 85-77 victory over the Lady Toppers.

McGee led with 23 points, including five three-pointers. Chastity Gooch notched a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. 

Junior guard Alexis Govan reached the 1,000-point scoring plateau with a free throw late in the second half to go with her 20-point game. 

The Lady Toppers are back in action next Sunday against Jackson State at 2:00 p.m. in Diddle Arena.
