The WKU Lady Topper basketball team ran away with a 87-49 win over Kentucky Wesleyan in its first exhibition game of the season Tuesday night in Diddle Arena.

WKU shot 48.6 percent from the field while holding KWC to just 28 percent. Junior guard Alexis Govan and junior forward Chastity Gooch led all scorers 18 points apiece. Gooch also added 14 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Jalynn McClain chipped in a double double of her own with 12 points and 10 boards.

The Lady Toppers put on a defensive clinic by forcing KWC to turn the ball over 25 times. However, WKU also coughed it up 18 times.

Coach Michelle Clark-Heard said the Lady Toppers showed heart in the first exhibition game, but she’s looking forward to going back and watching the tape so that the team can begin to improve from this exhibition.

“The effort was there from everybody,” Heard said. “At times we looked a little scarce and not on the same page, but…it’s the first exhibition game. I’m looking forward to going back and watching the film.”
