Herald Staff

The Toppers are experiencing changes in the coaching staff days after their loss in the NCAA Tournament.

WKU assistant coach Phil Cunningham is expected to be named the new coach at Troy during a press conference Tuesday, according to reports.

Troy’s former coach Don Maestri retired after a loss to Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Hot Springs, Ark. He coached at the school for 31 seasons, compiling a 500-404 in his time at the head of the program.

Cunningham will inherit a Troy team that went 12-21 this season, including a 6-14 stint in the Sun Belt.

He spent one year as an assistant coach at WKU, arriving at the program in time for the 2012-13 season after serving as an assistant coach at Mississippi State for 12 seasons beforehand.

The Toppers went 20-16 in his one season working for WKU, including an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
