The Lady Topper basketball team remains unbeaten on the road after a 59-53 win over Kent State Sunday afternoon.

WKU is now 7-2 for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

It wasn’t the greatest performance from WKU on the offense. The Lady Toppers only shot 35 percent from the field but edged Kent State out at the rim by winning the rebounding battle 44-43.

Sophomore forward Chastity Gooch collected her eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The game was a tale of scoring dry spells for both teams.

The WKU defense forced a six-minute drought in the middle of the first half for the Golden Flashes while the Lady Toppers advanced their lead by 12 points to 22-10 at the 8:15 mark.

The Lady Toppers then allowed Kent State to close a 17-point lead down to one point in the last four minutes of the half, as WKU entered halftime holding onto a 32-31 lead.

While Kent State held the lead 37-36 about three and a half minutes into the second half, the Lady Topper defense stepped up once again.

The Golden Flashes went over 14 minutes without a field goal before a midcourt steal and score cut the Lady Topper lead to 49-43 with 2:13 to go.

The Lady Toppers hit seven of eight free throws, four from freshman guard Leasia Wright, in the final minute of the game to leave with a 59-53 win.

To add to Gooch’s double-double, sophomore guard Alexis Govan finished with a team high 17 points.

WKU will have a full week to rest up to return to Diddle Arena for Southern Missouri State next Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
