WKU announced Monday night that senior defensive end Quanterus Smith tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Saturday and will miss the rest of the season.

Smith went down early in the fourth quarter against Lousiana-Lafayette and was removed from the game. An MRI on Monday confirmed he had torn his ACL.

Smith was finishing a breakout season in which he led the NCAA in total sacks (12.5) and sacks per game (1.25). He was also ranked No. 3 in the nation in tackles for loss with 18.5 through ten games.

The loss is a big blow to the WKU defensive line as they prepare for the last regular season game of the year. Smith was replaced in Saturday’s game by senior defensive lineman Kenny Martin.

WKU will have a week to adjust in practice before the Toppers take on North Texas at noon Saturday.
