Statement from former WKU coach Ken McDonald regarding his firing

Ken McDonald

Ken McDonald was fired as WKU’s head basketball coach on Jan. 6. He released a statement late Monday night:

I would like to thank Gary and Julie Ransdell for their leadership, support and friendship during my 8 plus years at Western Kentucky University.  I would also like to thank Wood Selig for the opportunity he gave me to lead one of the nation’s finest basketball programs as the head coach.

WKU is very dear to my heart and I wish nothing but absolute success for Hilltopper basketball in the future. My biggest challenge has been not being with the team and freshman class as they grow and develop each day. I want to personally thank them for their hard work and commitment.  I am thankful for and love each player in that locker room and have enjoyed every single day as their coach.  I hope the freshman class stays in tact; In time, this group is going to be special and will make the Hilltopper nation proud.

A special thank you to the people at Houchens Industries for your loyalty and support. Jimmie Gipson, you are an inspiration to so many people including me. I am so thankful for your guidance and friendship.

Lastly, I would like to thank my staff for their effort and dedication to the team and university.  I am also thankful to so many friends, alumni and fans for their support and friendship. You truly represent the spirit of Western.

Go Tops!
