With bowl hopes still alive, WKU needing help from four teams on Saturday

Brad Stephens

WKU fans likely won’t know until Sunday night if their team is in or out of a bowl game.

But they could have a better idea of the Toppers’ bowl chances by Saturday night, pending the results of four college football games.

WKU (7-5) is currently one of several teams sitting in the at-large pool, waiting on an invite to a bowl.

The outcomes of four games (Connecticut at Cincinnati, No. 24 Southern Mississippi at No. 6 Houston, No. 12 Georgia vs. No. 1 Louisiana State and Brigham Young at Hawaii) will have a direct impact on the at-large pool and WKU’s placement within.

Connecticut (5-6, 3-3 Big East Conference) at Cincinnati (8-3, 4-2)

VegasInsider Betting Line: Cincinnati (-9.5)

Time: 11 a.m. CST

TV: ESPN (Dave Pasch, Chris Spielman)

Who WKU fans should cheer for: Cincinnati

How this affects WKU: A UConn loss would make the Huskies ineligible for a bowl, keeping the pool of at-large teams that WKU is competing with for a bowl berth as small as possible.

Also, the Big East would not have enough eligible teams to fill all of its tie-in obligations. That could ease the Toppers’ course to the BBVA Compass Bowl (Jan. 7, Birmingham, Ala.), or the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl (Dec. 20, St. Petersburg, Fla.)

No. 24 Southern Mississippi (10-2, 6-2 Conference-USA) at No. 6Houston (12-0, 8-0)  C-USA Championship Game

VegasInsider Betting Line: Houston (-17)

Time: 11 a.m. CST

TV: ABC (Mike Patrick, Craig James)

Who WKU fans should cheer for: Houston

How this affects WKU: With a win in the C-USA Championship, Houston will run its record to 13-0 and will receive an invite to a Bowl Championship Series bowl, likely the Sugar Bowl (Jan. 3, New Orleans).

That would move eligible C-USA teams up one slot each in the bowls with which the league has tie-ins.

That could give the Toppers an opening to get a bid to the Liberty Bowl (Dec. 31, Memphis, Tenn.), Hawaii Bowl (Dec. 24, Honolulu), or the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl.

No. 12 Georgia (10-2, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) vs. No. 1 Louisiana State (12-0, 8-0)  SEC Championship Game, Georgia Dome, Atlanta

VegasInsider Betting Line: LSU (-10)

Time: 3 p.m. CST

TV: CBS (Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson)

Who WKU fans should cheer for: Georgia

How this affects WKU: A Georgia upset would give the Bulldogs the SEC Championship, and the automatic BCS berth that comes with it.

Even if LSU wins, they’re likely to advance to the BCS National Championship anyway, where they’d likely face another SEC team, Alabama.

Therefore three SEC teams would have spots in BCS bowls.

That would move the other eligible SEC teams up one slot each in the bowls with which the league has tie-ins.

That could give WKU an opening to get a bid to the Liberty Bowl or the Music City Bowl (Dec. 30, Nashville).

Brigham Young (8-3) at Hawaii (6-6)

VegasInsider Betting Line: BYU (-8)

Time: 6:30 p.m. CST

TV: ESPN2 (Carter Blackburn, Brock Huard)

Who WKU fans should cheer for: BYU

How this affects WKU: A Hawaii loss would be the Rainbow Warriors’ seventh of the year, making Hawaii ineligible for a bowl.

That could give the Toppers access to the Western Athletic Conference’s vacant spot in the New Mexico Bowl (Dec. 17, Albuquerque, N.M.)

WKU’s bowl hopes were helped on Thursday night by West Virginia’s 30-27 win over South Florida, the Bulls’ seventh loss of the year.

The South Florida loss increased the Toppers’ chances of reaching the BBVA Compass or Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowls.

The latest bowl projections from Jerry Palm of CBS Sports have WKU facing Southern Mississippi in the BBVA Compass Bowl.

Other recent projections, like those of Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel, have the Toppers staying home and not getting a bowl invite.
