Lady Tops get swept in series at Troy

After Saturday’s back-to-back, one-run losses to Troy, the Lady Toppers’ weekend couldn’t get much worse.

But WKU (21-20, 3-9 Sun Belt Conference) slid even further Sunday as they lost to the Trojans, 9-0, in six innings to cap the weekend sweep.

Head Coach Tyra Perry said the eight walks given up by the Lady Topper pitching staff played a major role in Sunday’s run-rule defeat.

“We came out ready to play, but we gave up eight walks,” she said. “It’s really difficult to win like that.”

Troy jumped to an early lead in the first inning on a two-run home run from shortstop Nikki Hollett and never looked back from there as the Lady Toppers suffered from an anemic offense.

WKU managed to grab just four hits on the day, two of which came from junior Laura Smith.

A two-run home run from Troy pinch hitter Lauren Griffith ended the game early by run rule in the bottom of the sixth.

The Trojans tagged sophomore Kim Wagner for seven runs on eight hits in 4 and 1/3 innings pitched as she took the loss for the Lady Toppers.

Perry said the youthfulness of the team was on full dispay Sunday.

“The bottom line is that we’re really young, and we have a couple things to learn,” she said. “We have to get on the same page.”

WKU fell to eighth place in the Sun Belt with the losses, seven games behind first-place Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Lady Toppers play another conference series at Florida International next weekend, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at 3 and 5 p.m., followed by the final game at 11 a.m. Sunday.
