Longtime UW-Madison football coach and athletic director Barry Alvarez has announced he is retiring this summer.

He took over as head football coach in 1990 and turned the Badgers from a perennial laughing stock to perennial contenders. He brought that same winning attitude to his job as athletic director, overseeing an expansion of sports facilities for UW athletes and a number of national championship in a wide variety of sports.
