WKU Men’s Golf wraps up first event of fall season
September 14, 2021
WKU Men’s Golf finished the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in 18th place out of 20 competing programs after posting a 14-over 302 in the final round of competition on Tuesday. The event was hosted by Louisiana Tech and played at Squire Creek Country Club.
WKU junior Luke Fuller led the Hilltoppers in the final day of competition as he tied his career-low of 4-under 68. Fuller rose up 43 spots on the individual leaderboard in his final performance of the week.
“Tough day for us as a team,” head coach Chan Metts said following Tuesday’s action. “We had a few guys put together rounds throughout the tournament but just couldn’t quite get four scores in together this week. I saw some good golf from everyone at times and feel good about where we are headed if we can just keep improving. I’m looking forward to getting back to Bowling Green to begin qualifying for our next event. We have a long way to go, but the ability is there with this team. We just need to learn to put it together and close out rounds.”
Between rounds two and three, Fuller improved to post a 4-under 68 on Tuesday afternoon. He logged five birdies, one bogie and 12 pars in the final 18 holes of the tournament. The Mount Sterling, Kentucky native ended up tying for the 33rd spot on the leaderboard out of 119 players.
Freshman Riley Grindstaff pulled in a 4-over 76 to conclude his first event as a Hilltopper. He tied for 40th at 3-over 219 for the entire event.
Fifth-year senior Jack Poole shot a final-round 6-over 78. Freshmen Stephen Warren and Elliot Pope both pulled in 8-over 80’s to round out WKU’s scoring.
The Hilltoppers will take a week-long break before heading back out to the course for the Graeme McDowell Invitational hosted by UAB on Sept. 27-28.
