WKU Men’s Golf earns best finish of season at Pinetree Intercollegiate

WKU Men’s Golf tied for second place in the Pinetree Intercollegiate, played on Oct. 17-18 and hosted by Kennesaw State.

After playing 36 holes on the first day of the tournament, WKU sat in third place at eight-over par as a team. The program was only two strokes back from second place.

Senior Luke Fuller and Sophomore Riley Grindstaff both fired an even score of 72 in the first round of the day. Grindstaff continued the strong play in his second round with a one-over par score of 73, finding his place in the top ten after two rounds tied for ninth.

Fifth-year senior Landon Carner improved his play by six strokes after scoring a 75 in the first round. He shot a 69 in the second 18 holes. He was tied for seventh after the first day of play.

Redshirt sophomore Nic Hofman was just one stroke back from the top ten after the first two rounds, shooting two-under par for a score of 70 in the second round. Junior Connery Meyer carded a 76 in the first round and followed it with an 81 in the second 18 holes.

After the final round of the tournament, the Hilltoppers secured their spot on the podium. The team shot 24-over par for the three rounds. WKU’s third day score was a total of 304 to tie Francis Marion University for second place.

WKU’s tie for a second place finish is the team’s best placement in a tournament this season following a fourth-place finish in the Xavier Invitational.

Two Hilltoppers closed the tournament in the top ten. Grindstaff placed third in the field with a 70 in the final round to make his three-day total score one-under par. Carner tied for ninth by shooting a 76 on the last day.

WKU will continue its season on Oct. 24 at the Paducah Country Club for match play against UT Martin.
