WKU Soccer has started its 2023 campaign undefeated through three games.
After a disappointing end to last year’s season in the Conference tournament, the Lady Toppers have begun this year with a win and two draws in their first three games.
The three-game win streak was highlighted by a 5-0 win over Union University on Aug. 19. A four-goal avalanche in the second half propelled WKU to the massive win as five separate Lady Toppers found the back of the net through 90 minutes.
“We made some adjustments at halftime which was really good to see,” Head Coach Jason Nieldel said on the game against Union. “We looked to get the ball deeper into the danger area to score some goals in the second half.”
WKU’s other two matches both resulted in draws. Firstly, the Lady Toppers drew 1-1 against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, Aug. 17, in their first match of the season. WKU outshot the Golden Eagles 12-6 in the match, however Graduate Katie Erwin was the only Lady Topper to score in the game.
WKU’s second draw came against the Siena Saints in a 2-2 contest, Aug. 24. The Lady Toppers jumped to a 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes of the match. However, despite WKU outshooting Siena 11-5 in the second half, the Saints scored two in the 45-minute period to conclude the match at a 2-2 draw.
WKU will look to stay unbeaten when they host No. 17 Xavier at the WKU Soccer complex on Sunday, August 27 at 1 p.m. CT.
