WKU Women’s Basketball fought off a late comeback attempt Saturday notching their second straight road win as the team took down Kennesaw State 72-62.
The Lady Toppers, who never trailed, entered the fourth quarter up 13. The Owls clawed back, bringing their deficit to just six with five minutes left. However, WKU stalled KSU’s momentum, outsourcing the Owls 9-5 for the win.
Senior guard Destiny Salary led the way with 16 points and guard Alexis Mead added on with 15 of her own. It was a total team effort as eight Hilltoppers were in scoring figures.
First Half
The Lady Toppers started strong, outscoring the Owls 13-4 early, powering the Hilltoppers to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Junior forward Zsofia Telegdy led the way with seven points, and Salary added five to start her consistent day.
The Owls fought back early to pull within three but the Hilltoppers continued to be consistent, scoring 17 in the quarter again to lead 34-26 at the break. Mead scored five points, and Freshman guard Salma Khedr came off the bench and scored four points late in the quarter.
Second Half
The Lady Topper’s consistency was on full display, scoring 19 points in the third to pull ahead 53-40 at the end of the quarter. The Owls pulled within five points several times early, but key shots from Senior guard Acacia Hayes and Mead kept the Lady Toppers ahead. Both scored four points in the third.
Due to a six-point Destiny Salary run, the Lady Tops built an 11-point lead with just over four minutes left. However, the Owls fought back, pulling within six with under two minutes to go. The Lady Toppers hung on due to clutch free throw shooting from Hayes, Mead, and Salary taking the win 72-62.
The Lady Hilltoppers will return to Diddle Arena with a chance to bring their win streak to three against rival Middle Tennessee State. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on Jan. 18.
