For the first time in program history, WKU Women’s Golf took home the Conference USA title on April 16 and earned the right to play for an NCAA Regional Championship May 5-7.
WKU was selected Wednesday to travel just 150 miles from Bowling Green to Lexington to take on 11 other teams in the regional. The regional will be spearheaded by No. 1 seed Florida State, with WKU being the No. 10 seed.
“I think it’s really cool being so close. We can kind of have a home-field advantage. So I think us being only two hours away, we can get a lot of fans and a lot of friends and family coming out,” Hackett said.
Junior Lady Topper and CUSA individual champion Sydney Hackett said the Lady Toppers knew what they wanted to accomplish in the Conference USA Championship.
“We said all semester, we’re like, ‘we want rings, as a team, we want a ring.’ I was like, ‘we’re doing this,’” Hackett said.
Despite it being the first time the Lady Toppers have made it to NCAA Regionals, they have NCAA experience in individuals, with senior Catie Craig going to regionals by herself last season. However, Craig said having the team there makes her “feel better.”
“To have my fellow teammates with me, I’m not alone out there so having people to fall back on, we get into our little 90 routines and to go through pin, and just having fun together,” Craig said.
The Lady Toppers will look to finish in the top five in Regionals to advance to the final sight in Carlsbad, California on May 16-21 for a chance at the national championship.
