WKU Women’s Basketball took down Lindsey Wilson 52-41 Wednesday night despite an offense that “looked pretty bad,” Head Coach Greg Collins said.
The Lady Toppers scored just 18 points in the first half, shooting just 8-30 from the floor. They bounced back in the second half, scoring 32 points, shooting 12-21. Lindsey Wilson scored 15 points off the Lady Toppers’ 25 turnovers.
“It’s the turnovers,” Collins said. “The majority of it is bad passes, but there are other turnovers that we’re getting that just are frustrating.”
The Blue Raiders didn’t take advantage of WKU’s slow start, scoring just 14 points in the first half and only scoring from the free-throw line in the first quarter. Junior guard Jarie Thomas led the team in scoring with just six points, shooting 2-6.
The Lady Toppers found their footing on defense through their rebounding. WKU grabbed 28 defensive boards, 43 total, compared to the Blue Raiders’ 18, 31 total.
“The defense is way ahead of the offense,” Collins said. “We can guard.”
Senior forward Zsofia Telegdy led WKU on nearly all fronts, posting seven rebounds and scoring a team-high 12 points on 40% three-point shooting.
In her first start as a Lady Topper, sophomore guard Trinity Rowe shot 2-8 from the floor and 1-6 from three. She also posted three steals and a team-high five assists.
WKU started the second half red-hot, scoring nine unanswered, five of which came from sophomore forward Torri James. The Lady Toppers outscored the Blue Raiders 34-27 through the second half to get the win in their first and only exhibition game.
WKU returns to the hardwood for its first regular-season game against Kentucky State Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. CT in Diddle Arena.
