WKU Women’s Basketball could not overcome Vanderbilt’s top-to-bottom performance in its 87-49 defeat Wednesday night, its second straight home loss.
The Commodores’ domination started with aggressive defense, which turned into efficient offense. Vanderbilt forced 24 WKU turnovers, converting to 25 points. The Commodores shot 49% on 67 shots, besting WKU’s 33% on 55 shots.
“They just seemed comfortable,” redshirt sophomore forward Tatum Boettjer said. “We really never got them out of their system.”
Vanderbilt won the rebounding battle, grabbing 43 boards over WKU’s 27. Nineteen offensive rebounds from the Commodores also led to 24 second-chance points. The Lady Toppers managed just nine second-chance points off of 12 offensive boards.
“They got the size advantage, so that was shown both on the score and on the rebounding,” senior forward Zsofia Telegdy said.
The Commodores started the game in a full-court trap press, forcing multiple Lady Topper turnovers and preventing WKU from finding a rhythm. A technical foul before the game on Vanderbilt sent sophomore forward Torri James to the free-throw line, going 1-2. WKU’s 1-0 lead was its only lead of the night.
The Lady Toppers could not contain sophomore guard Mikayla Blakes. She posted 28 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
Boettjer finished as the lone Lady Topper in double figures, scoring all 12 points from beyond the arc.
“It was nice seeing one fall after a few tough games… but it’s with the work of the team,” Boettjer said.
The Lady Toppers will face their second road test of the season next Wednesday night, Nov. 26, at Illinois.
