That’s five in a row. WKU Men’s Basketball dominated the New Mexico State Aggies 93-70 at Diddle Arena Thursday night.
Hot off dethroning Liberty last week, which snapped their 17-game win streak, the Hilltoppers carried the momentum back to Diddle. WKU shot lights out from the floor at 50%, and continued to find their 3-point shooting, finishing the night shooting 44%.
“It makes us a little more difficult, and when shots are falling, we play great,” senior forward Grant Newell said.
The Hilltoppers started the game scorching hot from the floor and did not look back, jumping out to a 17-0 lead. The damage was done from that point, with WKU taking as much as a 32-point lead before the final buzzer sounded.
It was an all-around effort with five players finishing the night in double figures for the Hilltoppers. Redshirt sophomore guard Teagan Moore and Newell led the charge with 23 and 18 points, respectively. This is Moore’s ninth game with 20 or more points.
Junior guard LJ Hackman finished the night with his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
“When he plays with a purpose and focus, he is really good. LJ makes the right plays, he is an unselfish player,” Head Coach Hank Plona said.
New Mexico State could not solve the suffocating defense of the Hilltoppers, being held to 32% from the floor and 16% from three. WKU forced 13 turnovers from the Aggies, converting them into 15 points.
“Just pressuring them a little bit, figuring out who can guard who,” Plona said.
It was raining points for the Hilltoppers in the first half, shooting 53% from the floor. Newell led all scorers in the half with 15, skyrocketing the Hilltoppers to a 48-26 halftime lead.
WKU will be in Diddle for the last time this season Saturday afternoon against UTEP for senior day.
