Music spanning decades streamed through the speakers of the Honors College and International Center multipurpose room Tuesday as history department students and staff jammed out at Singo.
The songs, spanning from 2000s hits from Brittany Spears and Katy Perry to classics from Guns n’ Roses and the Eagles, were all played as students scrambled to mark their boards.
History Department Head and Professor Audra Jennings organized the event, while Fun Forge business owner Shawn Quinn hosted. The decision to hold the event was inspired by fellow history Professor Jen Hanley’s own Singo Night experience.

During Hanley’s recent birthday celebration at Atomic Kitchen, the two enjoyed Quinn’s event so much that they decided to extend the experience to their students.
Jennings realized that having a simple and fun event would engage students with music across the decades and the history that comes with it.
“We were excited to create an opportunity for our students to engage with history in a unique way, but also to bring alumni back to campus,” Jennings said.

One such alum is Quinn.
Quinn is the owner of The Fun Forge, a go-to party and event rental company based in Bowling Green. The company operates out of various restaurants and event centers throughout the city, like Atomic Kitchen. The history theme, however, was equally as pertinent to Quinn, given his other job for 19 years.
“I’m a theater and history teacher, so anytime I get to throw in a bunch of history facts, trivia and information, it’s a lot of fun,” Quinn said.
Jennings said she looks forward to arranging future Singo nights.
“A lot of what we do as historians is interact with objects and artifacts, and music is an artifact of the past,” Jennings said. “I think songs are a powerful way to connect with different time periods and sort of put yourself in the shoes of someone who lived in the past.”
